Scholarly societies and publishers are being asked to uphold the high standards of scholarly publishing, while adding new features, but to move away from a subscription model in order to provide free access to all. The mathematical sciences, with no history of grant support for publications over the past two decades, face a particularly difficult challenge. We will explore some of the issues faced in a transition away from subscriptions.
