Network Formation and Ionic Conduction in Polymer Electrolyte Materials

Abstract
We present a novel energy formulation for the microstructured networks that develop when functionalized polymers interact with solvent. Such materials find widespread use in energy conversion and storage devices: PEM fuel cells, Dye-sensitized solar cells, Lithium-ion batteries. The formulation balances the favorable electrostatic interaction of tethered charges with solvent against entropic and elastic energy.
