Mark Kisin Harvard University I will explain recent joint work with Farb and Wolfson which determines the essential p-dimension of congruence covers of A_g, the moduli space of abelian varieties, and of certain of its subvarieties. The method uses the defomation theory of finite flat group schemes and p-divisible groups.
